Autonomy in early childhood education: systematic review of pedagogical dimensions
Publicado
2026-07-08

Context: Autonomy in early childhood education (ECE) is a fundamental pillar of holistic development and has gained significant prominence in contemporary pedagogical debates by promoting active participation and decision-making from an early age. Objective: This study aims to analyze the pedagogical dimensions of autonomy in early childhood education to understand its impact on the holistic development of the child. Methodology: A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines, examining a corpus of 20 original studies published between 2022 and 2026. The review analyzed pedagogical strategies, family involvement, active methodologies, and the conditions of the educational environment. Results: Childhood autonomy is identified as a multidimensional process influenced by play-based strategies, active methodologies—such as the Montessori approach—family engagement, and environmental factors. The findings highlight the teacher’s role as a mediator and reveal a significant theory-practice gap regarding the implementation of autonomy in the classroom. Conclusions: Developing autonomy in early childhood education requires a coherent alignment between educational policy, teacher professional development, and family participation. Strengthening these dimensions enables the design of pedagogical practices that recognize the child as an active agent of their own learning, thereby promoting sustainable and meaningful holistic development.
