Environmental education and water pollution in the Apurímac, Ene and Mantaro River Valley, Ayacucho
Publicado
2026-10-13
Context: Water resource pollution calls for educational strategies that strengthen knowledge among riverine communities. Objective: To assess changes in knowledge about water pollution in the Apurímac, Ene, and Mantaro River Valley following an environmental training intervention among participants aged 12–59 years in the district of Sivia, Ayacucho, between July and October 2025. Methods: A quantitative, pre-experimental study used a single-group pretest–posttest design. A total of 1,400 people participated. Results: The overall proportion of participants achieving a passing score increased from 21.7% to 85.0%, a gain of 63.3 percentage points, while the proportion failing decreased from 78.3% to 15.0%. Conclusions: Community environmental knowledge improved following the training; however, the study design does not allow this improvement to be attributed exclusively to the intervention.
