Online collaborative tools and argumentative writing in engineering students at an andean university
Publicado
2026-07-24
Introduction: Higher education necessitates the strengthening of academic writing among future engineers, as high-quality intellectual production requires argumentative competencies, information management, and critical revision skills. Objective: To determine the influence of online collaborative tools on the production of argumentative texts among Environmental Engineering students at the Santiago Antúnez de Mayolo National University in Huaraz, Peru. Methodology: A quantitative research study with a quasi-experimental design was conducted. The sample consisted of 62 students divided into an experimental group and a control group. Expert-validated assessment rubrics were applied to measure the quality of argumentative writing before and after the intervention. Results: The experimental group showed significant improvements following the application of online collaborative tools, reducing the deficiency level from 87.10% to 54.84%. The general hypothesis testing yielded a p-value of 0.000. Regarding the evaluated dimensions, information management obtained Z = -2.408 and p = 0.016, while argumentation and revision reached significance with p = 0.042. The control group showed no significant changes, with 87.10% of participants remaining at a deficient level. Conclusions: Online collaborative tools significantly improve the writing of argumentative texts in engineering students, bolstering information management, argument construction, and written revision processes. Their integration represents a pertinent strategy for enhancing academic communicative competencies in higher education.
